Caring for seniors is a rewarding career path, and many of our team members say they consider their residents as their own family! Here’s a guide on how to get started in your caregiving career in the senior living industry.
Educational requirements to be a caregiver
You only need a high school diploma or equivalent to get started as a caregiver! You must also be at least 18 years old.
While you’re gaining experience on the job, you can also attend school to further your career. Avamere Communities (managed by Arete Living) offers flexible schedules, including part time, full time, or on-call, so you can continue your education if you’re a student.
Gain caregiving skills
Being a caregiver takes skills in communication, as well as basic medical and caregiving skills, such as assisting with activities of daily living (ADL). The good news is – you don’t have to have experience in these areas to apply as a caregiver! You’ll gain the training you need to serve residents.
Certification and licensing
Certifications and license requirements can vary by state. To be a caregiver with Avamere Communities, you’ll receive training and don’t need an additional license.
Gain caregiving experience
Get all the experience you can! Apply for caregiving positions, and don’t be afraid to ask questions! Find a mentor in one of your co-workers, managers, or professors at school. Ask to train for other positions if you see another area that interests you, such as med tech or any position outside nursing.
At Avamere Communities, our President Sarah Silva encourages team members to find their passion. There are many opportunities in senior living from nursing to dietary to life enrichment and more.
“We will assist you in whatever next steps of a career you are looking for.” – Sarah Silva, President of Arete Living
